One of the greatest wonders God has allowed me to witness is that the deaf Christian community praises God of their own accord, that they are able to correct me when I make a mistake, knowing that I am their pastor, and they do so by applying grace (2 Peter 3:18). It is wonderful to see that they love Christ and that they themselves are learning to be disciples of Christ, following His Word. Although not all of them have done so, there is a group who have decided to learn more and more, applying the Word of God in their lives; this is the case of Alejandro from Irapuato, Marco and Jazz from León, Romeo and María in Querétaro, Coco in León, Jesús Rangel in Salamanca, José de Jesús and Brenda in León, and Óscar in León. They have made the most progress in the gospel, and I don’t mean that they’ve already memorized many Bible passages. I don’t know how it is in the US, but in Mexico, it’s very difficult for the deaf community to learn Spanish. Therefore, I’ve focused on them learning the Bible, obviously, but applying it to their lives rather than just memorizing a passage. Their progress is incredible. They also make mistakes, like everyone else, but they’ve been able to recover and trust in Christ again. The Holy Spirit has allowed me to see that these young people can, in the future, be the next leaders and that they themselves will take the gospel to their community, making more disciples (Matthew 28:19-20).
Each of them has gone through quite complicated situations in their daily lives, they have had difficult moments but they have learned to form a spiritual family called the Church, and they know now that we can, in the face of adversity, be together as one body (1 Corinthians 12:27) and we can give our burdens to our brothers so that they can help us to pray, confess our sins to one another, and that is how the Holy Spirit moves among us, as it says in Acts 2:42-47, always together.
May we focus on unity among ourselves, on learning and applying grace (2 Peter 3:18). We showed Christian movies at the church in Irapuato on Sundays this month, and the brothers and sisters certainly learned to trust in Christ!
Something I can discuss with you is that the deaf community, in their youth, mostly never had a role model, that is, someone to teach them how to behave in the face of adversity, a very serious problem, or a deep negative feeling. This caused the deaf community, even knowing Christ, to act as if it were something normal, and Christian films have served as role models.
War Room (on prayer)
Fireproof (on marriage)
Facing the Giants (on trusting God during adversity)
Courageous (on family and responsibility)
These four films taught them these topics, and they were amazed. You might wonder how they were able to read the dialogues if Spanish is so difficult for them. Well, I was the sign language interpreter for all the dialogues. It was astonishing how the Holy Spirit motivated and taught them. Glory to Christ.
Now I see Violeta, Alejandro’s wife from Irapuato, with a greater love for God; she still has a way to go, but she’s doing well.
I ask you to pray for all of them, that their faith may not falter, that they may remain steadfast in Christ, that they may use their gifts and be as Christ taught us and walk in good works Ephesians 2:10.
Jesus Christ blesses you all.
