This month, I want to tell you about Brother Pedro (name has been changed for safety reasons), one of the deaf brothers. He accepted the gospel in 2023 and was baptized in February 2024. Pedro’s story has unfolded in an environment rife with drugs and organized crime, surrounded by family hardship. He lost a daughter because his ex-wife took her without telling him, and for many years, Pedro never heard from her. Currently, he is living with a deaf woman, and they have a son together.
Pedro’s situation is that for 20 years, he has struggled with drugs, specifically marijuana. Marijuana has been his solace during all that time because of all the hardships he has endured. Three years ago, we contacted Pedro to share the gospel with him, which he accepted, and we were all overjoyed. But, as we all know, change isn’t quick. At first, Pedro seemed to have rejected the gospel because his life hadn’t changed at all. This went on for several months, and then in February 2024, he was baptized in the city of León. Marco Trejo baptized him, and afterward, he lived as if the gospel didn’t exist in his life. But we continued visiting him, teaching him about Jesus Christ, and praying with and for him. This went on for a year, until March 2025, when Pedro opened up to us—Marco and me—telling us that he was fed up with marijuana and wanted a change in his life because it was affecting his work and his family. Pedro had had many problems with his family because, due to his drug use, he hadn’t been able to find peace or work.
Marco and I were about to give up on him because the changes were barely noticeable. Marco and I prayed for Pedro, and the Spirit of God told us to continue with him. Marco and I were completely stunned by Pedro’s declaration. It was from that month onward that the changes in Pedro began. All the changes became more visible. If I had to give a percentage of change, I would say it was about 15% in those months. I’m referring to the fact that before, he lied a lot and deceived us, rarely wanted to meet with us, and got into trouble at work. And then, in August, he lost his job, and they didn’t rehire him. God made him lose his job so that Pedro would understand that he needs Christ.
God is good, very good, and I know He has great plans for him. From March until now, we’ve seen his change. Before, he was afraid to pray, and now he prays like an expert, like he’s been doing it for years. He’s not afraid to do it in front of people. But then came September and October, when God allowed him to be shaken. How did this happen? And because I know this for a fact, in a week and a half, he looked for work, he went to about 10 companies, and they all told him no, the reason being that he was deaf. In the second-to-last one, they told him yes, but when he took his drug test, it came back positive. Pedro was very depressed because it had been about 3 weeks since he had quit marijuana.
He thought that the marijuana had already disappeared from his blood, but it wasn’t like that. At the beginning of October of this year, he took another drug test, and it came back negative. Pedro, knowing that he no longer had marijuana in his blood, was so excited that he thanked God. I was there the moment he checked the drug test, and he gave glory to God in a way that I never thought he would. I don’t remember any deaf brother who has had that way of expressing himself about Christ; it was a fantastic and wonderful demonstration of faith. He witnessed firsthand the power of the Holy Spirit in his life.
By October, he had taken an exam for a job. To give you some context: all the companies Pedro had tried to get into were in other cities, further from home. But—surprise!—the company that hired him was only about 10 minutes from his house. God gave him a job very close to home! Hallelujah, glory to God! God began to bless him! Hallelujah, hallelujah to the Son of David! Now Pedro doesn’t miss any of the Zoom prayer or Christ-learning meetings, and he’s the one who prays the most. So much so that every night Pedro sends us WhatsApp messages asking if we’ve prayed, and he scolds us when we forget to pray.
Pray that Pedro doesn’t relapse into drugs, that he does well in his new job, and that he continues to grow in faith in the Lord.
